Long-read Data Analysis workshop

The two-day Long-read Data Analysis Workshop aims to introduce attendees to genome assembly using long-read data. As part of this workshop participants will perform a hands-on comparison between short and long-read microbial genome assemblies.

Workshop Dates

City Location Date Workshop Costs
Sydney Red Centre, University of NSW To be confirmed $330 (plus GST)

Workshop Content

Topics covered by this workshop include:

  • Introduction to long-read sequencing
  • Practical considerations when performing long-read sequencing and analysis
  • Introduction to the command line interface and NGS file formats
  • Short and long-read de novo genome assembly (microbial)
  • Comparison between short and long-read assemblies
  • Outline of bioinformatic tools available for non-microbial genome assembly

This workshop will be delivered using a mixture of lectures, hands-on practical sessions, and open discussions. A draft timetable will be released shortly.

Recommended Participants

Long-read Data Analysis workshop is designed for bench scientists, PhD students and early career postdoctoral researchers who are working with or are interested in using long-read data in their research and have little to no bioinformatics experience. The workshop utilises the Linux command-line, although no programming experience is required familiarity will be useful.

Learning Objectives

  • Familiarisation with long read sequencing technology and data
  • Gain experience in command line
  • Learn how to assemble a microbial genome with long read data
  • Perform a comparison of assemblies derived from short and long read data.

Registration and Payment

Workshop places are limited due to the significant practical component of this workshop. To manage high demand, all workshop applicants are subject to a selection process and must complete the online application. Registrations have been extended and Bioplatforms Australia will be taking applications until the 26th June. Successful applicants will be notified no later than 26th June 2017. The workshop fee of $330.00 (plus GST) covers course material, computer access, lunch and refreshments. If you are unable to apply online please email Andrew Gilbert at agilbert@bioplatforms.com.
